Through the Threshold
What is a shaman? Shamanism has been practiced for over 20,000 years and is found in every culture around the world. A shaman is a man or woman who has been designated by the tribe to be the keeper of ancient wisdom and practices. The shaman knows that reality is multi-dimensional and that these multiple realities can be accessed for self-knowledge, the healing of others, and the well being of the tribe. The shaman also goes by many other names—walker between worlds, the wounded healer, medicine man, he who sees in the dark.
What is a gay shaman? One of the traditional roles played by gay people throughout the history has been that of the shaman. Sometimes they are called two-spirited to indicate that they possess both male and female powers. A gay shaman today tends to the spiritual health of the community and the renewal of both the individual and the tribe. He is fearless and compassionate, being motivated by great feelings of love and brotherhood.
On two consecutive days, a group of gay men will share the history of shamanism, explore its significance in our modern culture, and discover personal power within.
