Through the Threshold
A revival of shamanism is occurring in societies around the world as peoples rediscover their roots that were destroyed by explorers and conquerors. In the West, gay men have found value in these ancient teachings.
What is a shaman? Shamanism has been practiced for over 20,000 years and is foundin every culture from which your ancestors came. A shaman is a man or woman who has been designated by the tribe to be the keeper of ancient wisdom and practices. The shaman knows that reality is multi-dimensional and that these multiple realities can be accessed for self-knowledge, the healing of others, and the well being of the tribe. The shaman also goes by many other names—walker between worlds, the wounded healer, medicine man, he who sees in the dark.
What is a gay shaman? One of the traditional roles played by gay people throughout the world has been that of the shaman. Sometimes they are called two spirited to indicate that they possess both male and female powers. A gay shaman today tends to the soul of the community and the renewal of both the individual and the tribe. He is fearless and compassionate, being motivated by great feelings of love and brotherhood.
On two consecutive days, a group of gay men will explore these questions and be introduced experientially to the practice of shamanism.
Particular focus will be given to the shamanic tools of dreaming (“visions of the night”) and journeying (“riding the drum”). Shamanic journeying increases one’s sense of inner power and aliveness, thereby contributing to a richer, more meaningful life.
Sacred space will be created and held for one another, enabling you to move safely at your own individual pace.
